Think Public Space
Work title: Ordinary Facilities
The public space, at any scale, is a determined place where the gathering between people can happen. According to this, the public realm has been defined at least in the last two centuries through the city planning. The public space has been always seen as an element to be normed and ruled, as an instrument of power.
The modern movement goes further. The public space is stratified into different uses depending its localization in the plan and depending on the uses given from the planning: there is a square for children, a square in business areas, a people''''s square, a square of the government, etc. Since there are not mixed areas, this mono-functional public space remains a part of the day uninhabited. The lack of activity follows a place without any urban transcendence for the people.
Nowadays this kind of modernist thinking seems to go in the false direction; The higher urban density turned this squares and public spaces into manifestation points. The people have the need to take the public space to their own, making these points to the support for manifestations, from the social to the artistic.
The actual state of the public space in Europe and worldwide shows that almost every square has been given to economical purpose; if you want to stay and rest, you have to consume.
On one hand, this makes possible for a city to take back the investment of building and planning a public space, and invest in urban infrastructure. But on the other hand, the place lacks on flexibility, as well as on permanent social interaction. The square turned to be just a planned vacuum to be filled with tables and chairs of any cafe, restaurant, bistro, etc.
The siting place is a consumer good.
People´s Manifestation . Permanence . Sitting
We see the need to bring the public space to the people again, in order to create a balance between public space with economical purpose and public space with social purpose. We understand that one place can''''t be sustainable in time without each other.
To make an urban transformation in the public realm is necessary to bring flexibility to it. This way the public space adequate to the user, turning it a democratic space, with permanence and diversity, which the user, or the citizen, takes to his own. This way we can produce an interaction between people and space.
Flexibility . Bottom-up process
We think in an urban element, a facility, that would be easily adapt in any open place in the urban jungle, like a responsive urban facility that is free to use for everyone, every time. In consequence, it turns into an ordinary urban element, that everyones use and recognize.
A joint work between NGOs or GO and citizen is encouraged; the City or NGOs can dispose these elements in the different places in the city and the people transform them.
The proposal consist in a module (2,00x2,00x4,00m) partitioned in mobile step-sized (17,5cm x 2,00m x 50cm) parts. Each step-sized part is connected to each other, and can be moved in the Y-coordinate. By this movement, the module can be transformed into different shapes, that can host different uses.
These transportable modules can be brought in any square or uninhabited place in the city, and also can be added each other and combined, this way the possible transformations can vary on the size and situation of each site, in order to bring the balance between economical and social or also to bring urban life to a place that would be urban-speaking death.
By simple operations this modules can be transformed, taking place to almost infinite possible activities. Through this responsiveness the individual takes the public realm to himself.
Virtual interaction . Real interaction
Nowadays social interaction takes place also in the virtual world, thus, it is important to join the real world with the virtual one, and to bring this responsive public space into a digital level.
Understanding the importance of the immediately in this times, this transformations can be shared with everyone in a social network, in order to give everyone the possibility to use, share and enjoy the public space in the city. These responsive places can be published on the web with an App function, so that each place can be shared and showed; and on-the-move the people can decide where to spend some time alone or with someone else in the city.
